State of Missouri pilot program provides more quality childcare and improves economy

COLUMBIA — State leaders and childcare advocates launched a new pilot program that provided more quality childcare across Missouri. Developers of the program said Missouri’s shortage of affordable childcare hurt families and disrupted the state’s entire economy.

Governor Mike Kehoe and Missouri lawmakers approved $2.5 million for the program during the 2025 legislative session. State lawmakers, government officials and business administrators across the state said they had concerns about Missouri’s growing childcare related issues. Supporters of the new Missouri Child Care Works said it strengthened our economy, invested in children’s development and supported families battling the high cost of childcare.

Kids Win Missouri Executive Director Brian Schmidt said, “Throughout the State of Missouri, two-thirds of Missouri counties are a childcare desert where it’s really, really difficult to find affordable, quality childcare.”
